Cats and Essential Oils

April 18, 2017

I have been getting a lot of messages asking about cats and the essential oils we use in our products.

Cats are tricky because they metabolize and excrete things very differently than dogs and humans.  This is because cats liver enzymes cannot break down certain chemicals properly which can lead to severe illness and sometimes death.  So, when using essential oil products it is important to do your research before letting it touch your cats skin (or ingesting it).

Here is a list of safe and toxic essential oils for cats that I gathered from my own online research (just from other sites, not medical research sites).

Not safe for cats:

  • Tea Tree

  • Tangerine

  • Thyme

  • Yarrow

  • Spruce

  • Spearmint

  • Peppermint

  • Lemon

  • Lime

  • Lavender

  • Grapefruit

  • Clove

  • Frankincense

  • Eucaluptus

Safe for cats:

  • Cedarwood

  • Frankincense

  • Geranium

  • Lavender

  • Roman Chamomile

  • Rosemary

  • Marjoram

  • Sandlewood

  • Lemongrass

  • Eucaluptus

Notice something about these two lists? A few of the essential oils mentioned are the same!  What you find is deemed safe for cats on one site is deemed toxic on another.  This is why, at the end of the day, when someone asks me if our Prevention Spray can be used on cats I am hesitant to give a straight answer.  My final opinion, is do your own research so you feel comfortable before using any product that has essential oils on cats.
